Welcome to Macomb County! Here you’ll find a wide variety of recreational activities from golf courses and in-line skating arenas to canoeing and ice fishing. Ice skating, skateboarding, apple picking and hiking are just a few of the things to do here. With thirty-one miles of shoreline and over 100 marinas there are plenty of activities available year round!

Macomb County History

Macomb officially became a county on January 15, 1818 and was the third county to be organized in the Michigan territory. The county is named after General Alexander Macomb, a decorated veteran of the War of 1812. Macomb County is now the third largest county in the state with over 788,000 residents according to the 2000 census. The county spans 482 square miles and is considered to be a leader in business and industry, earning it the “Community of Economic Excellence” designation from the state of Michigan.

Macomb County Parks and Recreation

Macomb County is home to many excellent parks and recreational opportunities. The Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to providing a fun, clean and safe environment for all visitors and residents of Macomb County to enjoy.

Freedom Hill County Park
With 100 acres of land, many people visit this massive park to picnic, play on the playscape, or connect to the nature trail (Freedom Trail). The park has two outdoor pavilions, several picnic areas, a playscape and an outdoor Amphitheatre.

Macomb Orchard Trail
This 24-mile park is perfect for use as a hiking trail and a bike path. The trail starts at 24 Mile Road and Dequindre in Shelby and travels northeast to Richmond. Once completed the trail will be 180 miles in length and will extend from Shelby Township to trails in southeast Michigan.

Metro Beach Metropark
The Metropark includes 770 acres of beaches and 1.25 miles of Lake St. Clair frontage. The facilities also include a swimming pool with water slides, a tot lot and play areas, picnic areas, marinas, a nature center, a hike/bike trail, a golf course and more. Day and evening concerts are also held here during the summer months in the open-air pavilion. In the winter months visitors enjoy ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing.

Stony Creek Metropark
The Stony Creek Metropark was built around the Stony Creek Lake and offers 4,461 acres of recreational activities including picnic areas, a golf course, a nature center and a disc golf course. Aquatic activities include two swimming beaches, a boat launch and boat rentals. Scenic tours can be taken by hiking or biking the six miles of hike/bike trails and ten miles of paved roads. In the winter months cross-country skiing, sledding and ice skating are available for Metropark visitors.

Wolcott Mill Metropark
This 2,625 acre park gives visitors the opportunity to visit farm animals, see the historic grist mill or just play some golf with family and friends. The park also includes Camp Rotary which is located in north central Macomb County.

Stars & Stripes Festival
This festival is held at Mount Clemens and includes over 50 musical performances on three different stages and an amazing fireworks display. Other festivities include an offshore boat exhibit, a family fun zone with petting zoo, a BMX stunt show and carnival rides.
